Biodegradable

Your Biodegradable Plastic Bag Supplier in Malaysia, Without the Guesswork

Biodegradable covers at least three different products, and most quotes never say which one you are buying. Here is how to read any supplier quote, and exactly what Plastik Malaysia confirms in writing on yours.

Orders from 5,000 piecesThe actual figure varies by film type and format, and is quoted against your specification.

Someone has asked you to switch to biodegradable packaging. It may have come from head office, from a retail partner, from a tender document, or from a customer who wrote in about your carrier bags. Now you have to specify something you have never had to specify before, and every quote that lands in your inbox uses the same word to describe a noticeably different product.

This page is written for that buyer. It sets out what the word biodegradable actually covers in flexible packaging, what you should require in writing from any supplier before you approve a print run, and exactly what Plastik Malaysia confirms on a biodegradable plastic bag order in Malaysia. We have supplied custom printed flexible packaging to Malaysian businesses since 2015, and to be clear from the first paragraph: Plastik Malaysia is a supplier, not a manufacturer. We specify, source and print to your artwork, and we put the material on the quote in writing.

Why biodegradable is the hardest word in packaging to buy

Biodegradable is not a material. It is a claim about how a plastic behaves at the end of its life, and in flexible packaging that single word is used to cover at least three different products, with different costs, different disposal routes and different amounts of evidence behind them. On its own, it tells a buyer almost nothing.

That matters because a sustainability commitment usually has to be reported, not just felt. If your procurement lead has to describe the switch to a board, an auditor or a retail partner, the sentence they need is not that you went biodegradable. It is a specific material, a specific claim, and a document that supports it. A green claim is only worth what your supplier will put in writing.

Oxo-degradable, compostable and recycled content are three different things

Most quotes in this market fall into one of three families. Oxo-degradable film fragments faster than ordinary plastic. Compostable film is designed to break down under defined composting conditions. Recycled content film is conventional plastic containing recovered material. They are not interchangeable, and only one of them is a claim about what went in rather than what comes out.

Term you will seeWhat it actually isWhat happens to the materialWhat to ask for in writing
Oxo-degradableConventional plastic with an additive that speeds up fragmentation. It breaks into progressively smaller pieces. Fragmentation is not the same as full biological breakdown, and acceptance of the claim varies by market. The base polymer, the additive type, and whether the claim being made is fragmentation or full breakdown.
CompostableFilm designed to break down under defined composting conditions, usually referenced against standards such as EN 13432 or ASTM D6400.It breaks down where those conditions exist. Industrial composting and home composting are different conditions, and access to either depends on local collection. The exact standard, the certificate number, the issuing body, and whether it is industrial or home composting.
Recycled contentConventional plastic containing a percentage of recovered material, often post consumer. It behaves like the conventional plastic it is. The claim is about what went into the film, not about how the film ends. The percentage of recycled content, whether it is post consumer or post industrial, and how that content is evidenced.

None of the above is a statement about the film on your order. It is the vocabulary you need in order to read any quote from any supplier, including ours. Suppliers who use the word loosely are very often repeating what they were told further up the chain rather than trying to mislead anyone, which is exactly why the question is better asked in writing than over the phone.

What to require in writing from any supplier, including us

Before you approve artwork on a biodegradable bag order, get three things on paper: the polymer and grade, the nature of the claim being made, and the disposal route that claim depends on. If a supplier cannot supply those, that is useful information at quote stage and expensive information after production has run.

Name the material, not the adjectiveAsk for the polymer and grade written on the quote, for example HDPE or LDPE with the additive or content described. A material name can be checked by anyone. A green adjective cannot.
Ask which single claim appliesFragmentation, composting and recycled content are separate claims. Ask the supplier to state which one applies in one plain sentence, rather than collapsing all three into one word.
Ask what the claim depends onEvery end of life claim assumes a disposal route. Ask what has to happen to the bag for the claim to hold, and whether that route realistically exists for your customers.

One more habit that saves money later: insist the claim and the specification sit on the same document as the artwork approval. Separating them is how a business ends up holding 20,000 printed bags and no paper trail. The cheapest sustainability mistake to fix is the one you catch at quote stage.

What Plastik Malaysia confirms on a biodegradable plastic bag

Here is what is confirmed on a biodegradable bag from Plastik Malaysia. The film is HDPE or LDPE biodegradable, the finish is side seal or bottom seal, the bag is made to your measurements, and printing runs up to 8 colours or plain film with no print at all. The material for your order is stated on your quote.

MaterialHDPE or LDPE biodegradable
Film coloursClear, white, blue, green, yellow, pink, black or grey
FinishSide seal or bottom seal
GussetAdd 10, 12, 14 or 16 to the measurement
SizeMade to your measurements
PrintingUp to 8 colours, or plain film with no printing
Minimum orderOrders start from 5,000 pieces, actual figure confirmed in the quote
Production time4 to 6 weeks from artwork approval and deposit payment
Material and certification detailConfirmed in writing on the quote for your specific order

What we will not do is describe that film as compostable, as certified to a named standard, or as breaking down within a stated number of months. Those are separate claims carrying separate evidence, and we will not attach them to your brand on the strength of a marketing word. The exact material, and any certification that applies to your specific order, are confirmed in writing on the quote before you approve artwork.

If you are still working out sizes, gussets and film thickness, the plastic bag specification guide explains how a bag is described in a quote. The Malay language biodegradable bag page carries the same product details for colleagues who prefer to read them in Bahasa Malaysia.

Which formats businesses usually switch first

Most companies do not convert an entire packaging range in one go. The switch normally starts with the highest volume, most visible item, which for retailers and food and beverage brands is almost always the t-shirt bag. It is the bag the customer physically carries out of the shop, so it is the one that gets noticed.

Biodegradable t-shirt bagThe usual first move. Highest volume, most visible, and the item customers associate with your counter. Printed up to 8 colours, or plain if you want the material switch without a print run.
Flat bags, side seal or bottom sealMade to your measurements, adding 10, 12, 14 or 16 for a gusset. Common for bakery, retail packing and secondary packaging inside a larger carton.
The rest of the rangeCourier bags, OPP bags, ziplock, stand up pouches and shrink labels are all in our range. Which film applies to which format is confirmed in the quote, because not every format runs on the same film.

If the switch doubles as a branding exercise, printing your own brand plastic bags covers how printed film is set up and what artwork does to your timeline. For mixed ranges across several formats, start at custom plastic packaging and we will work through the list with you.

How an order runs, from enquiry to delivery

The process is short and fixed: enquiry, quote, artwork approval, deposit, production. Orders start from 5,000 pieces, though the actual figure varies by film type and format and is confirmed in the quote. Production takes 4 to 6 weeks from artwork approval and deposit payment.

Note that those two dates are really one date. Production does not begin at artwork approval alone, and it does not begin at deposit alone. It begins once both are done, so if you have a seasonal deadline, count backwards from there. Sending print ready files in the correct format is the single biggest time saver, and the artwork requirements page lists exactly what is needed.

Three objections worth settling before you order

Is biodegradable actually better?

Honestly, it depends on what happens to the bag once your customer has finished with it. Every end of life claim assumes a disposal route, and where that route does not exist, the benefit is smaller than the label suggests. That is not an argument against switching. It is an argument for knowing precisely which claim you are buying, so that what you tell your customers survives a follow up question.

Our customers will not pay more for it

Often true, and usually the wrong frame. Most businesses that switch are not trying to charge more for the bag. They are protecting a retail listing, meeting a tender requirement, or answering a sustainability question they now have to answer every year. If the commercial case feels thin, convert one high visibility format at your normal volume rather than the whole range, and watch what it does at the counter.

We already have a supplier

Good, keep them. A supplier who has run your packaging well for years is worth holding on to, and moving everything over for one product line rarely pays. What is worth doing is putting the three questions above to them in writing. If the answers come back clear, you have lost nothing. If the biodegradable line is newer territory for them, quote it with us as a second line and compare the two specifications side by side.

Biodegradable plastic bag questions we get asked most

Are your biodegradable plastic bags certified?

We confirm the material as HDPE or LDPE biodegradable, and we do not publish a certification claim on top of that. Whether a certificate, standard or test report applies to the film on your particular order is confirmed in writing on your quote. If a certificate is a hard requirement for your reporting, say so in the enquiry so it is settled before artwork.

What is the minimum order for biodegradable plastic bags?

Orders start from 5,000 pieces. Treat that as a floor rather than a fixed rule, because the actual minimum varies by film type, size and format, and is confirmed in the quote. Send the size and the format and we will tell you where the minimum sits for that specification.

How long does production take?

4 to 6 weeks from artwork approval and deposit payment. Enquiry and quoting happen before that clock starts, so leave room for artwork rounds if the design is not final. For seasonal packaging, work backwards from your in store date.

Can we print our logo on a biodegradable t-shirt bag?

Yes. Printing runs up to 8 colours, and plain unprinted film is available if you want the material switch without a print run. Film colours are clear, white, blue, green, yellow, pink, black and grey, and the bag is made to your measurements.

What is the difference between biodegradable and recyclable for our reporting?

They are separate claims. Recyclable describes whether the material can be collected and reprocessed where your customers are. Biodegradable describes breakdown behaviour. Recycled content describes what went into the film in the first place. Tell us which claim your report has to make and we will confirm what can be supplied and state it on the quote.

Can you match a bag we already buy?

Usually. Send a photo, the flat measurement, the gusset if there is one, the film thickness if you know it, and your artwork. If you have a sample bag in hand, most of the specification can be read straight off it. We quote against that specification rather than a guess.

What do you need from us to start a quote?

Four things: the bag size, the format, the print requirement, and roughly how many you need per order or per year. Artwork can follow later. That is enough for a written quote with the material stated, and it takes about a minute to send.

Get the specification in writing before you commit

When you are choosing a biodegradable plastic bag supplier in Malaysia, the deciding factor should not be who writes the greenest sentence. It should be who will put the material, the claim and the full specification onto the same document as your order, so you get back a specification you can show your buyer, your auditor or your board.
