Pouch Packaging

Pouch Packaging Malaysia for Brands That Sell by the Unit

Custom printed pouches in five formats, made to your measurements and printed up to 8 colours. Plastik Malaysia has supplied flexible packaging to Malaysian businesses since 2015.

Orders from 5,000 piecesOrders start from 5,000 pieces, and the actual figure varies by film type and format, so it is confirmed in your quote.

A pouch is chosen when a product needs to stand on a shelf, reseal after opening, or carry printed branding on a package the customer keeps handling after the first use. Plastik Malaysia supplies custom printed pouches to F&B brands, cosmetics sellers and any business that sells a product by the individual unit rather than in bulk trade packaging. Malaysian F&B businesses in particular have driven most of the demand for pouches over the last few years, as more small and mid-sized producers move from selling through a distributor in bulk trade packaging to selling directly to consumers on their own retail shelf or online store, where the packaging has to do the job a shopfront and a label used to do together.

When a pouch earns its place, and when it does not

A pouch earns its place when the packaging itself is part of the sale: a product that sits face-out on a retail shelf, a refill format that customers reopen repeatedly, or a gift item where presentation matters as much as protection. It is the wrong choice when a product only needs to travel from a warehouse to a customer once, unopened, at the lowest possible cost. In that case a courier bag or a plain carrier bag does the job for less. We will say so rather than sell a pouch that does not suit the job.

Pouch formats we supply

Five formats cover most of what Malaysian brands order. The right one depends on how the product is used, not just what it is.

Stand-up pouchA flat base lets the pouch stand upright on a shelf. The standard choice for coffee, snacks and powders sold at retail.
Spout pouchA stand-up pouch with a screw-cap spout welded into the top or corner, built for liquids and semi-liquids that need to be poured and resealed.
Flat-bottom pouchA squared-off base gives a box-like shape with more shelf presence and label space than a standard stand-up pouch.
Side-gusset pouchGussets on both sides let the pouch expand to hold volume while lying flatter than a stand-up format, common for coffee beans and granular food.
3-side-seal pouchA flat pouch sealed on three sides, the simplest and lowest-cost format, used for sachets, samples and single-serve portions.

Complexity and cost rise together across this list. A 3-side-seal sachet is the cheapest to produce because it is a flat film with one seal pattern. A spout pouch costs the most because the spout is a separate component fitted during production, and the fitting step slows the line down. If your budget is the main constraint, the simplest format that still does the job is usually the right starting point, and you can always move to a more complex format once the product has proven itself in the format that costs less to test.

What a spout pouch is for

A spout pouch is built for anything a customer pours and reseals more than once: sauces, drinks, liquid detergent, baby food and similar products. The spout is welded into the pouch during production, so the size and placement need to be confirmed before the film is cut. It costs more than a plain stand-up pouch because of the extra component and the welding step, and it is usually the format that justifies the higher price point on a retail shelf, since a resealable spout is a visible convenience a customer pays for.

Refill and sachet pouches

Refill pouches are sized to top up an existing rigid container rather than stand alone on a shelf, and they are usually the 3-side-seal or side-gusset format since neither needs to stand upright in a refill station. Sachets follow the same 3-side-seal construction at a much smaller size, built for single-serve samples, sauces and powders. Both formats are commonly sold as a lower-cost companion to a brand's main packaging rather than the primary product.

Pouch specifications

Material and layer structure depend on what the pouch is holding, not on a fixed catalogue. A pouch for dry snacks does not need the same barrier film as a pouch for liquid or hot-filled product, so we match the structure to your product rather than quoting one standard laminate for every job.

MaterialLayered laminate film, matched to your product rather than one fixed structure
FinishHeat seal, matte or gloss film available
Film coloursClear, white, blue, green, yellow, pink, black, grey

PrintingUp to 8 colours, or plain film with no printing
Order sizeOrders start from 5,000 pieces, actual figure confirmed in the quote
Production time4 to 6 weeks from artwork approval and deposit payment

Tell us what the pouch needs to hold, including whether it is hot-filled, frozen, liquid or dry, and we will confirm the right layer structure in your quote.

Why the layer structure changes by product

A pouch is rarely a single sheet of film. Most are a laminate of two or more layers, each doing a different job: an outer layer for print quality and stiffness, a middle layer for barrier properties such as blocking oxygen, moisture or light, and an inner layer that seals to itself under heat and is safe against the product. A dry snack mainly needs moisture protection. A hot-filled sauce needs a layer rated for the fill temperature. A product sensitive to light or oxidation needs an additional barrier layer that a simple dry good does not. This is why we ask what the pouch is holding before quoting a structure, rather than offering one laminate for every job.

Choosing a pouch for your product

The product inside decides the format more often than a design preference does. Coffee and other roasted or fermented dry goods need a one-way degassing valve if they are packed fresh, since trapped gas will swell or split a sealed pouch without one. Liquids need a spout or they cannot be poured cleanly. Products sold as a top-up for an existing container rarely need to stand upright at all, which is why refill formats are usually the simplest and cheapest shape available.

Custom printed pouches for retail shelves

A pouch is one of the few formats a customer keeps handling after the first use, which is why the print matters more here than on a courier bag or a shipping mailer. Up to 8 colours are available on any format, and most F&B brands print the full face of the pouch rather than a small logo, since the packaging is doing the job of a label and a display at the same time. Matte and gloss finishes are both available on the same film, and most brands pick one finish sitewide for consistency across their product range rather than varying it product by product.

Pouch or bag: which packaging fits your product

A pouch and a plastic bag solve different problems even though both are flexible film. A bag is generally the lower-cost option for products that do not need to stand upright or reseal, such as items shipped once to a customer or sold loose by weight. A pouch costs more per piece but carries the packaging itself as part of the product presentation, which is why F&B and cosmetics brands selling at retail tend toward pouches while businesses focused on shipping cost tend toward bags. If you are not sure which category your product falls into, describe how the customer actually uses the package after it arrives, and we will point you to the cheaper format when a pouch is not actually needed.

How ordering works

1. Send your specificationPouch format, size, what the product is, and quantity. If you are not certain yet, send what you have and we will fill the gaps.
2. Receive a quotePricing, film structure and lead time confirmed against your specification.
3. Confirm artworkYour print file checked against the finish and film colour before production starts.
4. Production4 to 6 weeks from artwork approval and deposit payment through to delivery.

Ordering pouches in bulk

Plate and setup costs for a printed pouch are shared across the full run, so the cost per piece drops as the order size grows. A 5,000 piece order carries the same plate cost as a 20,000 piece order of the same design, which is why most brands ordering for genuine retail distribution, rather than a first test batch, order well above the 5,000 floor. If you are a wholesaler or distributor buying for several retail accounts at once, tell us the total volume across all your customers rather than quoting per account, since combining the run into a single production job is usually the more efficient route on price.

Three things buyers raise before they order

We are not sure which format suits us

Most buyers already know once they see what each format is built for: shelf presence points to stand-up or flat-bottom, resealable liquid points to spout, and low cost per unit points to a 3-side-seal sachet. If it is still unclear, send us what you are packing and we will recommend a format rather than leave you to guess.

We already have a supplier

That is a good position, and it does not need to change. A supplier who already understands your product carries value that is not easily replaced. Many businesses that run a stable operation still keep a second supplier on file purely for continuity, particularly around peak season or when one film type runs into a supply delay.

5,000 pieces is too many for us

That figure is a starting point, not a promise for every product. The most direct way to reduce the commitment is to settle on one format and one size first, or choose plain film with no printing so the same pouch can serve more than one product with a separate label.

Frequently asked questions

Is Plastik Malaysia a pouch manufacturer?

No. Plastik Malaysia is a pouch packaging supplier in Malaysia, not a manufacturer, and we do not own a factory. We specify the job, control the artwork and print process, manage production and deliver to you. What that means in practice is that you get one accountable point of contact for the specification, the printing and the delivery date, and you are not the one chasing a production floor.

What is a stand-up pouch used for?

A stand-up pouch has a flat base that lets it stand upright on a shelf, which is why it is the standard choice for coffee, snacks and powders sold at retail rather than shipped in bulk.

What is a spout pouch?

A spout pouch is a stand-up pouch with a screw-cap spout welded into the top or corner, built for liquids and semi-liquids that a customer pours and reseals more than once.

What material is used for pouch packaging?

Material and layer structure depend on what the pouch is holding rather than one fixed laminate. Tell us your product, including whether it is hot-filled, frozen, liquid or dry, and we will match the structure to it in your quote.

Can pouches be printed in full colour?

Yes, up to 8 colours, on any of the five formats we supply.

What is the minimum order for custom pouches?

Orders start from 5,000 pieces. That is a floor, not a fixed figure. The actual minimum varies by film type and format, so the number that applies to your job is confirmed in your quote.

Can I get a sample before I order?

A sample from our existing stock is free. A sample built to your exact specification is not, because it needs its own plate and machine run before it exists, which carries the same setup cost as a real order.

Does a stand-up pouch need a degassing valve?

Only if the product releases gas after packing, which mainly applies to fresh-roasted coffee and some fermented foods. Without a valve, trapped gas can swell or split the pouch. Tell us if your product falls into this category and we will include the valve in the specification.

Can you match a specific Pantone colour?

Yes. Send the Pantone reference with your artwork and we will match it during the print run rather than approximating from a standard colour set.

What is a customised pouch?

Customised pouch is the same product as a custom printed pouch, made to your size and printed with your artwork rather than sold as a blank stock item.

What artwork format do you need for pouch printing?

A print-ready vector file is preferred, with any Pantone references marked. If you only have a logo as a raster image, send it anyway and we will confirm during the quote whether it needs to be redrawn for a clean print.
