Retort Pouch

Retort pouches, specified around your recipe

A retort pouch goes into the steriliser with the food already sealed inside. That one fact is why it cannot be ordered from a catalogue. The layers that survive the process depend on what is sitting between them.

Orders from 5,000 piecesQuoted against your own specification, not against a fixed package.

Why food producers move off cans

Lighter to shipThe pack itself weighs almost nothing, so freight cost falls on every carton you send.
It stands on a shelfA flat front face gives you a full printing area. A round can does not, and never will.
Shorter process timeHeat travels through a thin pouch faster than through a can, so flavour and texture take less punishment.
Opens without a toolNo can opener. For ready meals sold online that matters more than most producers expect.

How a retort pouch is built

A retort pouch is not one plastic. It is several laminated layers, each doing a different job: one withstands the heat of the process, one blocks light and oxygen, and one sits against the food and stays safe at high temperature.

That combination is what sets how long your product keeps. It is also why a retort specification cannot be guessed. It follows the food type, the fat and acid content, and the shelf life you are aiming for.

Products that commonly use it

Ready-cooked mealsRendang, curry and other dishes sold shelf-stable, with no chiller needed anywhere in the chain.
Soups, porridge and baby foodWet products where the pack has to survive sterilisation without affecting what is inside.
Sauces and wet pet foodTomato-based sauces and wet pet food, both long-established retort categories.

Why this page has no specification table

Every other product page on this site lists a micron range. This one does not, and the reason is worth stating plainly: a retort structure quoted before anyone has asked what goes inside the pouch is a guess.

A wrong retort structure does not fail on the shelf. It fails in the steriliser, after your artwork is printed and the run is paid for. Printing first and checking the specification afterwards is the most expensive way to learn this.

What to prepare before you ask

Retort needs more technical detail than anything else we supply. Have these ready and the quote comes back accurate the first time.

What we needWhy it matters
Food type, and whether it is acidic or high in fatAcid and fat both attack the food-contact layer differently
Fill volume or weight per packSets the pouch size and the seal strength required
Retort temperature and hold timeThe process the pack has to survive
Target shelf lifeDetermines how much oxygen and light barrier you need
Whether you need a spout, tear notch or gusset bottomThese change the tooling, so they belong in the first conversation

If you have not fixed your retort parameters yet, tell us what you do know. That is a perfectly good place to start.

What buyers ask before they order

What is a retort pouch?

Packaging that goes into a retort machine together with the food already sealed inside, and is sterilised under high heat and pressure. It replaces cans and glass jars for products that have to keep without refrigeration.

Can you quote a retort pouch without knowing my product?

Not honestly. The layer structure follows the food type, the fat and acid content, and the retort temperature and hold time. Send those and the quote comes back accurate.

What is the minimum order for retort pouches?

5,000 pieces per specification.

How long does a retort pouch order take?

4 to 6 weeks from artwork approval and deposit.

Can retort pouches have a spout or a tear notch?

Yes, and a gusset bottom. Mention it at the quote stage, because these change the tooling.

Can retort pouches be printed in full colour?

Yes. The flat front face is one of the better printing surfaces in flexible packaging.

Tell us what you need.

Send the food type, the fill volume, your retort parameters and the quantity. If you have not fixed all of them yet, send what you have and we will work the rest out with you.
